Right now, in Tennessee, to write a ticket they must physically witness it.
During an early October day in Memphis, we followed along on a bus to do just that.
THP Sergeant Chris Richardson said, “Everybody drives distracted in some way shape form or fashion.”
THP partnered with the Memphis Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office for a distracted driving bus tour.
The goal was to ticket distracted drivers and spread awareness. In just 90 minutes, they wrote 42 tickets.
We saw several drivers looking down at their phone instead of the road. Some for more than 5 seconds at a time.
Law enforcement has few tools to enforce distracted driving.
